Tour of Berlin Part 1

Behind us is the German Eagle, the symbol of the government and the people. Germany has 16 Federal States. There are 614 people directly elected to the Bundestag. Germany has 5 different political parties.
Below, we are getting off our tour bus. It is a Mercedes naturally.

Before we began our tour,we were invited to lunch in the Bundestag cafeteria over looking the river Spree.

We are sitting inside the Parlament Hall where the German Congress meets. This hall is similar to the US House of Representatives.

After the presentation we visited with a secretary to Mr. Brähmig, the Bundestag Representative from Saxony where BSZ Freital is located.
A German MP is at the same level as a Congressperson.

We learned that the Bundestag is bi-cameral like the US Congress. It has the same legislative making abilities as well.

Here is a view of East Berlin. In the distance is the TV Tower. Below, Mr. Tarlecki and Mrs. Mitchell are standing in the dome of the Bundestag. The dome has becomed the most popular tourist destination in Berlin. More than 3 millon people visited it each year.

We are at Check Point Charlie having a fun time with our "border guards".
Checkpoint Charlie is the most famous border crossing in Berlin.
During the post World War II era Berlin was occupied by the Americans, British, French, and Russians. This was the crossing between the American and Russian sectors. In the rear of the picture is the Mauer Museum. The students learned what life was like during the time the wall existed. People invented many creative ways to escape to the west through the wall. Some were hidden in special compartments in cars. Others escaped by under water. Still, some built aircraft or balloons to escape. Some died for their efforts.

We are in front of a small piece of what is left of the wall.

This is an office tower in the Sony Center which is a part of the Potsdammer Platz. The Platz is on the old commercial center of Berlin. It was developed in 1999. Today it contains many entertainment, restaurant and retail venues along with office space for companies like Daimler (Mercedes).

We had dinner in a restaurant named the Lindenbräu that has
a tradtional German menu. In the distance are offices of a company.
